Detailed description

Ashwagandha, native to India, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka, is an adaptogenic root from the nightshade family. Its Sanskrit name means “smell of a horse,” alluding to the vital strength it provides, while its Latin name Withania somnifera refers to its calming and sleep-regulating effect.

Its dual action—calm + energy—is possible thanks to its adaptogenic profile: it balances the body according to need. In high stress, it lowers cortisol and facilitates relaxation; in exhaustion, it elevates vitality, mood, and endurance. This capacity makes it one of the most widely used adaptogens for anxiety, stress, chronic fatigue, mild depression, and low performance.

Ashwagandha improves deep (REM) sleep thanks to withanolides and triethylene glycol, which stabilize the nervous system. It is also used in Ayurveda for anxiety, mental hyperactivity, and to “clear the mind.”

The extract of Withania somnifera has been widely studied for:

  • Reducing stress, anxiety, and improving mood
  • Improving focus, mental clarity, and cognitive performance
  • Increasing physical endurance, recovery, and stable energy
  • Improving anemia: increases hemoglobin and red blood cells
  • Regulating LDL cholesterol and blood pressure
  • Strengthening immunity and increasing white blood cells
  • Protecting bones and preventing bone loss
  • Acting as an anti-inflammatory and analgesic
  • Protecting against side effects of antipsychotics and radiotherapy

It also possesses anti-cancer potential in preliminary studies, especially due to withaferin A.

In Ayurvedic medicine, Ashwagandha is one of the most important herbs for sexuality, fertility, vitality, and longevity, being used by both men and women.

How can a plant improve two opposite functions at the same time?

Thanks to its adaptogenic properties. Like Rhodiola rosea and Panax ginseng, Ashwagandha balances the body in stress situations. This allows it to calm tension when it intensifies or, conversely, stimulate in cases of depressive episodes. That is why Ayurveda uses its root to regulate immunity and improve sexuality, two functions that are impaired by stress.

  • It is considered an adaptogenic remedy, a relatively recent term that defines the capacity a substance provides to help us face an adverse or changing situation, allowing us to cope with it in better conditions. Withania has been shown to be effective in reducing excess stress, a psycho-emotional condition that can lead to other disorders if not kept under control.
  • Ashwagandha facilitates sleep and helps you mitigate insomnia. Experiments with mice have demonstrated the action of withanolides and triethylene glycol in stabilizing the REM phase of sleep, during which the deepest and most restorative sleep occurs.
  • Due to its nature as a revitalizing plant, also known as "orovale," it has been used to treat mild and occasional depressive and anxious states.
  • It is also intended for the treatment of attention deficit due to nervous hyperactivity, although its efficacy is not scientifically proven.
  • In India, Ashwagandha is used to clear the mind and to promote mental relaxation.
  • It is a prominent revitalizer, intended especially for elderly people, to curb loss of mood and vitality, and to combat asthenia.
  • Withania is also intended to combat nervous fatigue, weakness, and anemic states due to iron deficiency. Treatments with Ashwagandha can significantly raise hemoglobin and erythrocyte (red blood cell) levels in anemic people and those convalescing from an illness.
  • Its use has been valued for attenuating the side effects of taking antipsychotic medications used in the treatment of schizophrenia, by mitigating the possible increase in lipid and sugar levels that these might generate.
  • It is attributed with a stimulating effect on the thyroid gland; it favors the production of thyroid hormones, and it has been tested for the treatment of hypothyroidism, but conclusive studies are lacking.
  • Due to its anti-inflammatory and analgesic action, "orovale" has been shown to be effective in relieving rheumatic pain and reducing the inflammatory process in rheumatoid arthritis and incipient arthrosis.
  • In India, Ashwagandha is also intended to lower blood pressure in patients with high blood pressure and moderately high blood pressure, and to also decrease LDL cholesterol rates.
  • It has also been attributed with a certain immunomodulatory effect, which would favor an increase in leukocytes or white blood cells and strengthen the body against the eventuality of an infection or pathogenic aggression.
  • Ashwagandha extracts have been tested, still experimentally, to face certain side effects of radiotherapy. It has been proven that it could reduce myelosuppression, a bone marrow condition that causes a decrease in white blood cells, red blood cells, and platelets.
  • Recent studies, echoed by the Spanish Society of Phytotherapy, attest to the efficacy of ethanolic extracts of Withania root in preventing bone loss in experiments with mice. This treatment, applied to humans, could increase bone resistance to fractures, making Withania extracts an interesting support for elderly people and those with bone fragility.
  • Extracts of withanolides, especially withaferin A, have been used in clinical trials to test a possible inhibitory effect on the growth of tumor cells in some types of cancer, such as breast and colon, but we have not found conclusive information on this.
  • In Ayurvedic medicine, Ashwagandha has also been intended to improve sexual response and favor fertility.
